In Kwale County, Bamburi Cement starts Sh32Bn clinker manufacturing plant
Amsons Group Managing Director Mr Edha Nahdi left and Sinoma CBMI Chairman Mr Zhang Sicai signing the US$250 million Matuga Clinker Factory Construction contract.
Amsons Group subsidiary Bamburi Cement has rolled out a KES32 billion ($250 million) strategy to increase its clinker production capacity to 2.6 million tonnes from the current one million with the construction of a clinkerisation factory in Matuga area, Kwale County.
The plant will also see Bamburi Cement step up its annual production of cement to four million tonnes from the current 1.8 million tonnes even as it cuts forex costs associated with importing the key input in cement production.
Bamburi Cement's clinkerisation plant will be constructed by Chinese firm Sinoma CBMI Construction Co., Ltd .
In a market communique on Tuesday, Bamburi said its plant incorporates advanced, carbon-neutral technologies to reduce environmental impact.
The initiative is part of Bamburi Cement's corporate strategy to double its production capacity for quality cement and concrete products, and to power Kenya’s infrastructure development and economic transformation.
Bamburi Cement CEO Mohit Kapoor said the construction of Matuga clinker plant represents one of the most significant industrial investments by the company in recent years.
By doubling its clinker and cement production, Bamburi Cement Plc strategy aligns with President Ruto’s ambitious KES5 trillion roadmap to be financed by the National Infrastructure Fund that seeks to turn Kenya into a first-world economy.
“The new clinker line will greatly reduce reliance on imported clinker, improving quality production consistency and securing supply for the domestic market. This will save Forex resources, stabilise pricing, enhance production planning, and ensure Bamburi continues to meet rising cement demand driven by national infrastructure programs and private sector development,’’ said Bamburi Cement CEO, Mr Mohit Kapoor.
Amsons Group Managing Director Edha Nahdi reiterated the pan-African conglomerate’s commitment to supporting Kenya in achieving KES5 trillion blueprint to transform the country into a first-world economy.
“By signing this Clinkerisation Plant development EPC contract, Amsons Group is putting its money where its mouth is, to power Kenya’s national development and economic transformation,” noted Mr Nahdi.
Based in Kwale County, the Matuga project is expected to open job opportunities during construction and operations, boost local business participation, and stimulate economic activity in the wider Coastal region.
The plant is expected to incorporate modern, energy-efficient technologies that significantly reduce emissions and enhance operational sustainability, including Alternative Fuels & Raw Materials (AFR) such as coconut, cashew nut husks and municipal solid waste, sourced from the Coastal region.
This aligns with Bamburi Cement’s commitment to cleaner production, environmental stewardship, and long-term compliance with global climate standards.
Sinoma CBMI Construction Co., Ltd., part of the world-leading China National Building Material Group (CNBM), brings expertise in cement plant engineering, procurement, and construction.
The clinker manufacturing initiative also marks a transformative milestone in Bamburi Cement’s journey under the Amsons Group, just a year after the Tanzania-based conglomerate purchased the Kenyan firm.
