Ruto to steer Africa's climate action agenda

With a country reeling in the worst drought in a half-century, President William Ruto is set to chat the course for a safer and cleaner future as he steers Africa's climate action agenda in Ethiopia this weekend.

Dr Ruto is in Addis Ababa for the 36th ordinary session of the African Union Heads of State and Government summit where is set to moderate a meeting to review the outcomes and implications of last year's COP27 for the continent.

The COP27 meeting in Egypt ended with a long-awaited deal on a loss and damage fund for channeling finance to developing countries and new pledges to the adaptation fund. Africa, which accounts for the lowest share of global greenhouse gas emissions annually at between three and four percent, the continent suffers immense loss from the negative effects of climate change.

The President is also expected to invite leaders across Africa and globally to the Climate Action Summit that will be held in Nairobi in early September.
