Tax: 2.4M filers beat June 30 deadline
Over 2.4 million Kenyans have already filed their 2023 annual tax returns ahead of the June 30, 2024, deadline. This represents a 15 percent increase compared to the same period in May 2023, indicating a steady rise in compliance and a positive trend in taxpayers meeting their obligations.
The Kenya Revenue Authority’s (KRA) iTax platform has been instrumental in this improvement, enhancing efficiency and reducing the need for physical visits to various service centres.
iTax enables one to perform various tasks such as registering for a PIN, filing your tax return, applying for a tax compliance certificate, generating a payment slip, and checking your ledger account, among other functions.
Additionally, the Tax Amnesty Programme has benefited over 640,000 taxpayers as of May 6, 2024, with waived penalties and interest totalling Kes247 billion.
The Tax Amnesty Programme allows taxpayers to apply for a waiver of penalties and interest accrued up to December 31, 2022, upon full payment of their respective principal taxes by June 30, 2024. The programme runs from September 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024.
Taxpayers have paid overdue principal taxes amounting to Kes22.69 billion, with more than Kes29 billion declared as unpaid taxes. KRA encourages all taxpayers to take advantage of the amnesty by settling any outstanding principal tax debts by June 30, 2024.
