Kenya Re extends a helping hand to people with disabilities
As part of its Niko Fiti corporate social responsibility initiative, Kenya Re has initiated the distribution of assistive and mobility devices. This effort aims to provide support to over 390 individuals with disabilities residing in Kachibora and Saboti sub-counties within Trans Nzoia County.
The distribution will be carried out in three phases, ultimately reaching 1,000 individuals with disabilities across various regions of the country. This initiative aligns with Kenya's commitment to fostering inclusivity and diversity, enabling a broader participation in activities that enhance people's livelihoods.
During the event held at Kachibora Sub-county hospital in Trans Nzoia county, Kenya Re’s Group Managing Director, Dr Hillary Maina Wachinga said, “Kenya Re has a vision to secure the future for our stakeholders and our Niko Fiti initiative is one of the ways we are doing this. We want to empower persons with disability to integrate into society and to actively contribute to social and economic activities for the greater good.”
Dr. Wachinga added that it is essential for workplaces to embed inclusive policies for PWDs and retrofit buildings with structures that enable easy access for PWDs. He stated that this is how Kenya Re sets an example in all its commercial buildings and offices.

Fostering independence of PWDs
The Chief Executive Officer of the Association for The Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK), Anthony Nzuki, praised the partnership with Kenya Re, emphasizing that it has had a positive impact on PWDs in the country over the years. "We are not only supporting the Government's goal of including PWDs in society but also changing lives. By enabling them to move around unassisted, they can attend school, establish businesses, and engage in activities that truly foster their independence. We utilize our community networks and leaders to identify deserving beneficiaries, making this initiative a collaborative effort," he said.
The first phase of the 2023 campaign witnessed the distribution of 56 mobility devices and 351 assistive devices to 398 beneficiaries in Saboti and Kachibora.
The Niko Fiti Campaign has positively impacted the lives of more than 11,800 PWDs since its launch in 2011. The campaign's initial framework was shaped by insights from a nationwide disability survey, which encompassed information about PWD demographics, socio-economic and cultural attributes, the root causes of disabilities, gender-related issues, strategies for coping, and rehabilitation services. This year, the campaign's framework was enhanced to encompass three essential pillars: Environmental, Educational, and Community support.
