Kenya hosts global conference on harmonizing training of medics
Kenya will host a global meeting on the review and harmonization of curriculum and training of healthcare professionals next week.
The meeting whose theme is ‘Repositioning today’s health workforce for the future' will be hosted by the Ministries of Health and Education and will draw delegates from over 99 countries.
Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said the conference will be the first of its kind and will bring together professional trainers in the private sector, faith-based organizations, the Kenyan government, and regional governments to address the future workforce in the health sector.
“The meeting will address the future workforce in the health sector. For instance, what should a nurse of tomorrow look like, what must they be trained in,” Mr Kagwe said during the launch of the English language training program at the Kenya Medical Training College in Nairobi.
The conference will be held in Mombasa County from Monday to Wednesday and will be officially opened by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The conference will also provide insights on harmonizing the curriculum and training of health care professionals in the face of rapidly changing healthcare needs, and strengthening the capabilities of health professionals to support Universal Health Care (UHC).

Key speakers will attend the conference in person at Sarova White Sands Hotel in Mombasa County while other participants will join virtually.
Local, regional, and international corporations, medical institutions, trainers, and providers will also have an opportunity to showcase their work at exhibition stands during the meet.
Mr Kagwe, has termed the conference as a major milestone towards health care reforms aimed at strengthening technical and soft skill competencies.
He further said it will enhance global competitiveness and future job readiness of health professionals.
“This conference provides an opportunity to focus on ways of optimizing the health workforce, enhancing governance in cadre recognition, schemes of service and scope of practice for improved workforce management and retention, as well as formulating regulatory frameworks and cross-sectoral partnerships and collaborations,’’ added CS Kagwe.
