Four-time champions: Safaricom’s culture of excellence shines bright
Telco giant Safaricom has retained the top employer title in Kenya, bringing to four the number of years the company has achieved this recognition due to its human resource policies and people practices.
This recognition by the Top Employer Institute (TEI) saw its parent company Vodacom Group crowned as the best employer in Africa for the second year running. Subsequently, this first place ranking was also awarded to Safaricom Kenya, and Vodacom units in South Africa, Mozambique, and Tanzania.
“We are pleased to be recognized as a top employer alongside some of Africa’s biggest companies. This certification is an endorsement of the strong employer brand that Safaricom has created over the years by providing an agile working environment and numerous opportunities for employees to grow in their chosen crafts,” said Dr. Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom PLC.
Vodacom Group CEO Shameel Joosub stated, “By continually enhancing our employee value proposition through empathetic and inclusive policies and practices, we are cultivating a workplace culture where people feel valued, empowered, and inspired to reach their full potential.”
The Top Employers Institute Companies bestows this accolade to companies based on their performance in key human resource domains such as people strategy, work environment, talent acquisition, learning, and well-being.
Top Employers Institute chief executive officer David Plink said that this year’s programme highlights and celebrates the strength of certified top employers who continually put people first.
“In a time of rapid change where technological, economic, and social factors continually reshape our world, these extraordinary times bring out the best in people and organisations,” said Plink.
He added, “This year’s Top Employers Certification Programme showcases the resilience of the certified Top Employers 2025, who consistently prioritise the growth and wellbeing of their people, as they enrich the world of work. We are proud to celebrate these people-first leaders and teams.”
Safaricom first received the Top Employer recognition in 2022 and has retained this accolade in every successive year.
Meanwhile, the Board of Safaricom has appointed Edward Okaro as independent non-executive director effective January 15.
Okaro, who is a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), previously worked with audit and advisory services major Ernst & Young for 26 years, rising to the position of director and subsequently partner in Ernst & Young Africa Risk Services. He has over 30 years of experience in financial management and strategic risk management, the telco said.
