Boniface Mwangi freed on Sh1M bond over teargas find case

Activist Boniface Mwangi will be charged in court for the possession of ammunition without a license. According to his charge sheet, detectives found Mwangi with “three teargas canisters” and a blank round displayed at his office.
"On 19th July, 2025 at Mageuzi Hub, in Nairobi County within the Republic of Kenya, you were found in possession of noxious substances to wit (sic) three teargas canisters without lawful authority," his charge sheet drawn today at Kahawa Law Court states.
According to the prosecution, the activist was found with ammunition contrary to the provisions of firearm certificate section 26(1)(c) as read with section 26 (2)(b) of the firearms Act cap 114 laws of Kenya.
Appearing before magistrate Gedion Kiage at Kahawa Law Courts in Monday, Mwangi was, however, release on a personal bond of Ksh1 million. The case will be mentioned on August 19.
Mwangi was arrested at his home in Lukenya, with detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations accusing him of “facilitating terrorist acts” during the June 25, protests that rocked the country.
At his home, the police seized two mobile phones, hard drives, a laptop and several notebooks.
Official statistics show that the revolt let 19 people dead and wanton destruction of property as thousands took to the streets to voice their frustrations against President William Ruto's government.
The protests, largely led by the youth, popularly known as Gen Zs was primarily meant to pay tribute to tens pf victims of police brutality and violence, which occurred during a similar revolt on 25 June, 2024.
"Mwangi is currently in custody at Pangani Police Station, where he is undergoing processing to be arraigned tomorrow, Monday, July 21, 2025, for offences related to facilitation of terrorist acts and unlawful possession of ammunition," an update from the DCI stated.
Mwangi, who spend the weekend a police station in Nairobi denies the alleged charges, noting in a social media post shared by his supporters: “I am not a terrorist.”
