Dominic Orina, an educator based in Bomet County, has been shortlisted for the Global Teacher Prize, five years after fellow countryman Peter Tabichi brought the award home in 2019.
Selected from over 5,000 nominations across 89 countries, Orina's recognition underscores his extraordinary impact in combining education with modern agricultural practices.

This distinction places him among the top 50 educators globally vying for the coveted award, which comes with a Kes 129 million prize.
Orina shared his excitement through a social media post, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support of his community. His journey, which began as a dedication to equipping students with innovative farming skills, now stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration for educators and learners alike.
Orina is a teacher at Kugerwet Primary School in Konin Constituency and has been nominated for his work with the 4K club at the school where he encourages the learners to embrace innovative farming to help improve the food systems.
Under his guidance, the students started growing vegetables and later on, keeping rabbits and have been able to generate income by selling produce to the teachers and the local community.
Orina and his learners have also embraced technology by using social media platforms to publicize their activities and get financial assistance from well-wishers who bought school uniforms, textbooks and shoes for underprivileged pupils identified by the teacher.
“Keep me in your prayers to carry the trophy home by the end of the competition. My students, parents, teachers and the entire community, let us share this blessing. Improving people's lives through education is our priority. Glory be to God,” he added.
