President William Ruto has honoured former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon with Kenya's highest honours, First Class: Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (C.G.H.), State House, Nairobi.

President William Ruto has congratulated former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on receiving Kenya’s highest national honour, the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart, (C.G.H) in recognition of his global leadership and lifelong service to humanity.

In a statement released from State House, President Ruto described the award as a tribute to Ban’s “tireless advocacy for peace, justice, and sustainable development.” He noted that Ban’s legacy continues to have a profound impact across the African continent, particularly in the area of climate action.

“As the 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations, your visionary leadership brought climate change to the forefront of the global agenda, beginning with the 2007 Climate Change Summit. Your efforts galvanised international action that remains critical as Africa confronts the harsh realities of a changing climate,” President Ruto said.

Ruto lauded Ban Ki-moon’s transformative leadership at the United Nations, pointing to major institutional reforms under his tenure that enhanced the UN’s responsiveness to pressing global challenges.

“Your dedication to the Millennium Development Goals delivered tangible progress for many, especially across Africa,” Ruto said, referring to Ban’s commitment to the international development targets that laid the foundation for the Sustainable Development Goals.

Ban’s contributions to advancing human rights and gender equality were also highlighted, particularly his instrumental role in the establishment of UN Women and his steadfast efforts to end violence against women.

“Your dedication to the Millennium Development Goals delivered tangible progress for many, especially across Africa,” Ruto added.

The statement comes just days before the groundbreaking ceremony for the new headquarters of the Global Centre on Adaptation (GCA) in Nairobi—a climate-focused initiative closely aligned with Ban Ki-moon’s work and ongoing commitment to environmental resilience.

President Ruto described the upcoming facility as: “A symbol of our shared resolve to build resilience and secure a sustainable future.”

Ruto expressed Kenya’s appreciation for Ban’s exceptional service to humanity and emphasized the enduring influence of his leadership on global development and diplomacy.

“Kenya is proud to honour you for your lifetime of service to humanity,” Ruto said. “May this award serve as our profound appreciation of your vision, dedication, and the lasting impact of your work.”

The award of the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart is reserved for individuals who have made significant contributions to Kenya or to humanity at large, placing Ban Ki-moon among an esteemed group of global statesmen recognized by the East African nation.
