Authorities order Naivas shops in Nairobi shut over unsafe food

NAivas ordered shut

Health check at Naivas establishes that Daima Yoghurt on display on the supermarket shelves was expired, whereas KICC Delight Yoghurt lacked an indicated shelf life.

Nairobi County Health Committee has ordered for the immediate closure of all Naivas Supermarket outlets in Nairobi over the sale of expired products. The supermarket chain currently runs over 30 branches within the capital city, including areas such as Kilimani, Lavington, Westlands, Lang'ata, Buruburu, and Kasarani.

“We are here at Naivas Moi Avenue, and we have realised that there are expired products on the shelf, putting Nairobians at risk,” the committee, led by Maurice Ochieng, said on Wednesday, May 14.

Apart from the closure, the supermarket has been mandated to conduct product tests and reapply for a clearance certificate before resuming normal operations.

“Also, we found out that the people handling this product have not been tested. Therefore, as a committee, we resolve to close all the Naivas outlets in Nairobi so that they can be tested and be given certificates so that they are able to serve the Nairobians,” the health committee announced.

For instance, the health check established that Daima Yoghurt found on display on the supermarket shelves was expired, whereas KICC Delight Yoghurt lacked an indicated shelf life, leaving consumers unable to determine the manufacturing or expiry dates.

“Food safety is a top priority, and we are urging the Nairobi County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Health, Wellness and Nutrition, Suzanne Silantoi, to take immediate action,” he added.
