Josphat Gichunge Kabeabea, who is the chairman of the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA), has denied charges of soliciting KES5 million bribe from a Chinese company.

According to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Kabebea appeared today before the Milimani Anti-Corruption court on Monday where he denied accusations that he solicited and received KES5 million from the Chinese investor, Du Zhisheng.

Senior Principal Magistrate Celesa Okore heard that Kabebea sought the bribe in exchange for favourable treatment in a case involving suspected counterfeit motor vehicle spare parts.

"The investigations indicate Hon. Kabebea demanded a bribe of KES5 million from the proprietor of a business in exchange for foregoing investigations and refraining from arresting him and his employees. Eveidence further shows Hon. Kabebea received KES150,000 during the transaction," a statement by the DPP stated in part.

Kabebea was arrested by the officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission on Friday last week.

"According to the complaint, the suspect reportedly reduced the bribe demand from KES5 million to KES150,000, which was later sent to a mobile number believed to belong to his personal driver," EACC noted in an update announcing Kabebea's arrest.

Kabeabea denied the charges and was released on a KES2 million bond or an alternative cash bail of KEs1 million and ordered to deposit his passport.

The accused has also been barred from contacting or interfering with prosecution witnesses, to ensure the integrity of the case as it proceeds. The matter is set for mention on 8th December 2025, when the court will give further directions.
