New EACC chief executive Abdi Ahmed Mohamud.

Abdi Ahmed Mohamud has officially taken the reins as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC). Mohamud, who previously served as the commission's Deputy CEO, was sworn into office on Monday in a ceremony presided over by Chief Justice Martha Koome.

Mohamud, who takes over from Twalib Mbarak, has vowed to uphold integrity and lead the fight against corruption and economic crimes with diligence. Mbarak's six-year tenure ended on January 10.

“As I assume the office today, I am acutely aware of the huge responsibility and expectations Kenyans bestow upon the Commission. Further, I am cognizant of the adverse effects of corruption to the well-being of a nation.

"In that regard, I wish to offer my unequivocal commitment and fidelity to the oath of office that I subscribed to, in combating corruption, economic crime and unethical conduct in the country,” the new CEO said.

Chief Justice Koome commended Mohamud for his achievement and highlighted the significance of his role in advancing justice. "You will be embracing the trust and the confidence of Kenyans who will be looking up to you with great hope."

Mohamud, an insider at the EACC beat other 172 applicants to get the mandate to lead the country's anti-corruption agency. His experience at the EACC, particularly as the Director of Investigations for more than a decade, solidified his candidacy.
