Sh1.5 billion corruption scandal engulfs Kiambu’s Wamatangi

Kiambu Governor Paul Kimani Njoroge aka Wamatangi.
Kiambu County Governor Kimani Wamatangi is a man under siege. The governor, officially known as Paul Kimani Njoroge, was on Tuesday at the eye of a storm as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission as sleuths raided his home following allegations of irregular procurement and dubious payments amounting to KES1.5 billion.
In an update on Tuesday, the EACC said the raid led to the seizure of KES12 million and USD13,000 (about KES1.7 million) in cash from the residence of Governor Kimani Wamatangi. The detectives noted that the seizure was "suspected to be proceeds of corruption."
The EACC has further listed the governor and seven other senior individuals within Kiambu County government, accusing them of among others, "conflict of interest, procurement irregularities and abuse of office."
The other accused are the county CEC Finance Nancy Kirumba, CEC Lands Salome Wainaina, and Chief Finance Officer William Kimani. Also on the radar of EACC investigations are Phyllis Muiruri, who is the supply chain director in the devolved unit, a clerical officer Paul Wangari and the director M/s Filtronic International Ltd, Bernard Theuri.
According to the EACC, the eight are under investigations in a suspect contract deal where the county sought for the "supply, delivery, installation, testing, training, commissioning and support services of an Enterprise Resource Planning system."
"The contract, valued at KES230 million was awarded to M/s Filtronic International Limited during the 2022/23 financial year."
EACC Chief Executive Abdi Mohamud noted that the eight are also facing allegations that they engaged in trading with the devolved unit and records show they received a total of KES1.5 billion through dubious procurement plan and fictitious supplies.
The anti-graft agency said that it has already recovered "critical evidentiary material to support ongoing investigations."
