Evidence points to Juja MP staging his abduction

Juja MP George Koimburi
Detectives at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) now say that preliminary investigations point to a staged abduction by the Juja lawmaker George Koimburi, for political gains.
“Fortunately, we've been able to expedite the investigations and to expose him to the public that the MP was indeed not abducted,” the DCI boss, Mohamed said.
One of the suspects arrested was involved in staging the abduction and had made a confession to the police. "One suspect, Karanja Gatana, has been arrested. Gatana admitted to dropping the MP at a hotel where he had refreshments and spent the night with two abductors on May 25," Kanja announced.
According to the police, the MP spent the night at the hotel and was transported to the scene of the crime on Monday morning. "He admitted that on May 26, while using another vehicle, he picked up the MP from the hotel and took him to the scene where they claimed that he had been dumped. Before the MP exited the motor vehicle, he helped him tear his clothes to fake evidence of torture by the alleged abductors," he added.
While addressing the press at the DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road, DCI boss Amin Mohamed said that officers trailed MP Koimburi’s movement until the last moment he was discovered at the coffee plantation in Juja, they found glaring and inconsistent gaps disabusing the forceful abduction.
"We were able to account for all his movements from the time he attended church up to where he slept at night. We have identified the hotel and the room number where he slept." The National Police further intimated that a probe into the incidents has revealed how MP Koimburi worked with his proxies to stage his capture.
According to Kanja, after the interrogation of the suspects, Peter Kiratu (Juja CDF chairman), Cyrus Kieru Muhia and Karanja Gatana, officers managed to identify the Subaru vehicle used in the abduction.
The police reports that Muhia, who runs a supermarket at Kahawa West area, stated that on May 24, he received a call from Kiratu asking for his Subaru Forester to transport additional security for the MP while they attended a church service in Mugutha.
On 25 May 2025, Kiratu instructed him to go to his homestead in Mugutha, where he met a man named Gatana (driving Kiratu’s vehicle, Reg. No. KBР 096W) Honda CRV along with three unknown men. They proceeded to the church to familiarise themselves with the route before returning.
Peter Kiratu, the Juja CDF Chairman and also the one who reported the incident at Mugutha Police Station, stated that on 25 May 2025, he attended a church service at Full Gospel Church, Mugutha, with the MP. As they were leaving, a silver Subaru Forester Reg. KBP 096W approached the main entrance, and two heavily built men bundled the MP into the vehicle.
Later, Kiratu called and instructed Cyrus to drive his Subaru Forester with two men towards the church. Upon arrival, the two men exited quickly, and he heard screams as the MP was forced into the vehicle. They drove towards Jacaranda Coffee Research via Kambogo Road, where the MP instructed them to stop near a waiting Honda CRV (Reg. No. KBP 096W), belonging to Kiratu. Cyrus was left with the two men, who warned him not to disclose any information to the police.
“The police have managed to recover two vehicles, a Honda CRV (Reg. No. KBP 096W) belonging to Peter Kiratu and a Subaru Forester, silver in colour (Reg. No. KDG 803B) belonging to Cyrus Kieru Muhia,” said the police.
The police boss maintained that investigations were still ongoing, with detectives expected to record a statement from the MP who is in hospital. They also promised to take action against the MP once the full investigation is complete.
"If an offence is disclosed in the course of our investigations, then naturally, the law will take its own course." Koimburi had previously been under investigation for a land fraud case. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) had already approved his prosecution.
