KenGen tips Olkaria SEZ to attract data center firms, EV makers

KenGen Green Park

KenGen Managing Director, Eng. Peter Njenga: Strategically located in Olkaria SEZ, the KenGen Green Energy Park offers businesses direct access to clean, reliable, and cost-effective power while significantly reducing emissions.

Energy producer KenGen is wooing green firms, data centres and electric vehicle manufacturers to set up shop at Olkaria following the official designation of the area as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

KenGen said this designation will attract investors seeking world-class infrastructure, green energy, and business friendly policies.

The Ministry of Investments, Trade, and Industry has declared the 8,292-acre Olkraia SEZ to harness Kenya's geothermal energy for investment-driven growth. Businesses setting up in the area are poised to benefit from tax incentives, infrastructure support, and access to affordable, and reliable renewable energy.

In an update on Friday after the government's approval of the SEZ, KenGen said Olkaria's abundant geothermal energy will turn the site into an ideal location for manufacturers looking for reliable, low-cost, and green power.

"Our green energy park represents a transformative shift in Kenya's approach to industrial development. By integrating clean energy solutions into manufacturing and industrial operations, we are not only reducing carbon emissions but also ensuring long-term sustainability and cost efficiency for businesses," said KenGen Managing Director, Eng. Peter Njenga.

He added, "Olkaria's abundant energy makes it an ideal location for industries looking for reliable, low-cost, and green power, aligning with Kenya's vision of becoming a global leader in renewable energy-driven industrialization."

Olkaria SEZ is served by the Standard Gauge Railway, enabling the delivery of raw materials and shipment of products to the Port of Mombasa reliable. The zone is also strategically linked to the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, offering manufacturers access to both local, regional and global markets.

According to the Nairobi Securities Exchange-listed firm, Olkaria SEZ, which hosts KenGen's Green Energy Park is part of the country's broader strategy to enhance industrial competitiveness by creating attractive investment environment.

KenGen said the park is poised to attract manufacturing companies such as agro-processors that are keen on leveraging access to affordable power to drive food processing and value addition.

Other investors which KenGen expects will designate Olkaria SEZ their home address are textile companies, electric vehicle makers and assemblers and ICT companies with an eye for green-powered establishments.

"With industries globally transitioning to net-zero operations, the Olkaria SEZ offers an ideal platform for businesses looking to integrate renewable energy into their production processes. By directly connecting industries to geothermal energy, we are not only lowering operational costs but also reinforcing Kenya's leadership in green industrialization," explained Eng. Njenga.
