Absa CEO tapped to guide Kenya’s shift toward green business

Absa Bank Kenya PLC CEO Abdi Mohamed has been appointed Chair of the UN Global Compact Network Kenya Board, a role where he will be steering the country's corporate leadership in aligning with sustainable development goals.

His appointment comes at a time when organizations and businesses continue to place focus on inclusive finance, ethical business conduct, and climate-conscious growth. 

Mohamed takes over from Martin Ochien’g, CEO of Sasini PLC, whose tenure saw notable progress in embedding sustainability principles in Kenya’s private sector.

He noted that his tenure will champion scaling up impact, deepen private sector engagement, and drive sustainable business practices that contribute meaningfully to Kenya’s development and the global Sustainable Development Goals.

Joining Mohamed in steering the board is Jane Karuku, CEO of East African Breweries Limited, who assumes the Vice Chair role, succeeding Kariuki Ngari of Standard Chartered Bank. 

The leadership shake-up also sees the exit of Carole Kariuki, KEPSA CEO, whose tenure was marked by strong cross-sector collaboration in promoting responsible business practices.

UN Global Compact Network Kenya Board has also welcome three new Board members:Mr. Tom Gitogo, Group Managing Director and CEO of Britam Holdings PLC, Dr. Toseef Din, Chief Executive Officer of MP Shah Hospital, and Ms. Mary-Ann Musangi, Managing Director of Haco Industries.

Ms. Sheila Masinde, Executive Director of Transparency International, Kenya and Mr. Jonathan Van Zeller, Director Alamaya Group have also been re-elected to the board  for a three-year term.

In an update, the network said new appointments bring diverse expertise from key sectors, further strengthening it’s strategic focus on inclusive growth, responsible business, and sustainable development.

Outgoing Chair Mr. Ochien’g thanked the Board members for their support and wished the new team success as they embark on a new chapter noting that the new Board will provide the strategic direction needed to accelerate sustainable and responsible business across the country and in the region.
